GREAT NIGHT IN: THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (R2 DVD) ****

"Two pretty American girls are on a road trip through Europe. When their car breaks down somewhere in Germany they must search for help, finding an isolated villa. Drugged by its owner, they awake to find themselves trapped in his basement hospital along with a Japanese man. They are about to be joined together in a horrific operation; the mad doctor planning to be the first person to connect people via their gastric system, thus our three victims becoming the first human centipede.

Unlike anything seen before, director Tom Six refuses to mix in every trashy element you would expect from such a premise (with the exception of one vital question subtly answered), and taken on its own ludicrous terms, this slow burner is never less than engaging and offers enough shocks and chills, especially in the opening gambit, to sustain high levels of interest. Ashlynn Yennie, playing Jennie, is awful here, so it's a blessing when she takes up the rear, but Dieter Laser, the mad Dr. Heiter, is superbly sinister, and Ashley C. Williams (Lindsay) acquits herself well in a role impossible to comprehend - great stuff."
