Jaws in a supermarket. Probably not the easiest sell, but
director Kimble Rendall (The Jesters) got away with it, and somehow managed to
persuade a decent cast including Xavier Samuel (The Loved Ones), Julian McMahon
(Nip/Tuck) and Sharni Vinson (You’re Next) to play along. Mind you, a decent
script helps, and aided by six writers, Bait is full of fun, with a CGI shark
to die for.
After an unstoppable tsunami destroys everything in its
path, a sunny paradise beach town is suddenly turned into a living hell.
Trapped in a submerged supermarket after a botched robbery, a group of
survivors are desperately trying to find an escape route. To make matters
worse, they are being hunted by a very large, and very hungry, great white shark.
Scariest of all, however, is the performance by Dan Wyllie as Kirby. Seriously,
you’ll be rooting for the shark. Luckily, for the most part there’s plenty to enjoy. The body
count is impressive, as are the deaths themselves, and despite a few end-of-the-pier
effects, this is a tight, cleverly constructed horror that works just as well
without the 3D glasses. If Jaws is the Gucci, Bait is certainly no cheap
imitation. The only thing missing is a Dale Winton cameo. DW
