AVOID: GROWTH (R2 DVD)

"In 1989, a breakthrough in advanced parasitic research on Cuttyhunk Island, population 421, gave scientists a jump in human evolution. Initial tests proved promising as subjects were experiencing heightened physical and mental strength and awareness. But, something in the experiment went horribly wrong and the island mysteriously lost three quarters of its population, revealed here in a rather annoying opening sequence reminiscent to a Basement Jaxx music video that never charted because it was rubbish.

The film isn't that mysterious either, because slithery bugs that make stupid noises (think Gizmo without the cuteness) are introduced from the very beginning via some pretty rubbish CGI. The main protagonists cope with a poor screenplay that relies heavily on flashbacks but are at the very least likeable, and yet with a low budget, poor effects and a plot that veers from mildly interesting scientists-in-over-their-heads to annoying-super-human-zombie-killer, you'll care little when the population of Cuttyhunk (don't ask) inevitably dwindles down to its last inhabitants."
