ONE TO WATCH? I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2 (DVD)

We weren't big fans of the 1978 version of I Spit On Your Grave, so the remake was a welcome surprise when it rammed a shotgun up our assets in 2010. It did alright for itself too, and more to the point, a friend of mine considers it to be the best film ever made. He's not a close friend. A sequel was somewhat inevitable, and Steven R. Monroe returns to helm the second film in the series, but that's where the similarities end. None of the original characters return, which is hardly surprising really, most of them died a horrible death in part one.

The star of the show this time out is Katie (Jemma Dallender), a beautiful girl living alone in New York, trying to make a living in the cutthroat world of modelling. When Katie accepts an offer to have free photos taken for her portfolio, the experience turns into an unthinkable kidnapping nightmare. Sixty excruciating minutes later, a twist of fate frees her from her captors. Katie spends the next forty minutes tapping into the darkest parts of the human psyche, finding the strength to exact a brutal and bloody revenge.

Let's face it, hopes weren't high for the straight to DVD sequel of a remake that nobody asked for, which means I Spit On Your Grave 2 is another moderate success. Its gritty, grimy and sleazy throughout, with plenty of gratuitous torture, torment and fleshy bits thrown in for good measure. Jemma Dallender acquits herself well enough, particularly when she's asked to go psycho. There are some nice touches along the way, production values and performances are strong enough, and once again, the final torture sequence is immensely harrowing from a male perspective.

If rape revenge thrillers are your thing, you can't ask for more than this. I Spit On Your Grave 2 does exactly what it says on the tin. You might not remember it in a year's time, but as far as unwanted sequels go, this is as good as it gets. AW
