Rock Of Ages is the film adaptation of the rock musical about a small town girl, Sherrie (Julianne Hough), and city boy Drew
(Diego Boneta), who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood
dreams. The film features the music of several 1980s rock artists including Def
Leppard, Journey, Scorpions, Poison, Foreigner, Pat Benatar,
Joan Jett, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and others; which
is probably the only reason you’ll need to watch it.
In fact, other than another absorbing performance from Tom
Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, there’s little else to justify its lengthy running time.
The plot – we think there is one - is silly and isn’t helped by a selection of
songs chosen simply because the title fits the story even if the lyrics don’t,
while most of the humour is derived from the ridiculous costumes rather than
the script.
Russell Brand suffers the most ("nobody puts donkey in the corner"). A shame considering the film actually contains a host of risqué gags, but they're gratefully devoured by Cruise instead. Mary J. Blige has no reason to be there, Bryan Cranston needs to be in it more and even Debbie Gibson has the balls to show up. The songs are awesome though, which is why you'll be entertained regardless. DW
