"Remember when M. Night Shyamalan took the superhero genre
and turned it on its head with Unbreakable? Josh Trank pulls the same trick
with Chronicle, and produces one of the best films of the year in the process.
When three ordinary high school friends make an extraordinary discovery, they
acquire amazing abilities beyond their understanding.
Telekinetic powers allow them to crush cars at will, move
objects around the room and even fly. More importantly of course, it gives them
the confidence they need to get women into bed. As their strength grows, so do
their darker sides, and harmless pranks give way to dangerous escapades that
could spell disaster for everyone. Written by Max Landis (son of John Landis),
Chronicle stars Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan.
Chronicle embraces a familiar concept (the found footage
thriller) and takes flight with it, blowing the audience away with shocks,
surprises and jaw dropping action. The story is nothing new but the approach
feels fresh - Chronicle is blessed with a smart script, exhilarating direction
and engaging lead turns.
Dane DeHaan is definitely a name to look out for in the
future. At times he channels a young Leonardo DiCaprio and his performance
grows stronger as the mood darkens. The characters are well written and given
plenty of room to breathe, which means you’ll care about their plights when the
high-flying climax touches down on your TV screen. Josh Trank’s debut gets
better and better as it goes along, building steadily to a mind blowing finale
that grabs a hold like no other movie this year. Shocking. Surprising.
Electrifying. Don’t miss it." AW
