And there we were worrying that British television viewers would never take to subtitles. Following on from the success of The Killing, Swedish/Danish crime series The Bridge begins on Saturday 21st April at 9.00pm on BBC4. Two episodes will be aired that evening, and a BBC4 press release describes the series as "a ten-part investigative crime-drama, beginning when the body of a woman is found in the middle of the Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark. A bi-national team is put together to solve the crime, and the killer, always one step ahead of the police, becomes the object of a dramatic manhunt."
With our appetites thoroughly whetted, it's time to step beyond the bridge and uncover in true Sarah Lund style other essential Scandinavian viewing. A big baggy jumper is optional.
13) THE KILLING (2007)
Gripping from the outset, this BAFTA Award winning and Emmy nominated Danish crime TV series asks the question who killed Nanna Birk Larsen and, over the course of twenty days, captivates the viewer as suspect upon suspect is sought out in all manner of compelling ways.
Sarah Lund (Sofie Grabel) may be looking forward to her last day as a detective with the Copenhagen Police Department, but it will be you looking forward to every new episode as you try desperately to piece together the clues before she does - engrossed by over a thousand minutes of thrilling drama.
So dig out that turtle neck and be careful who you trust. Unless it's the show's crator, Danish writer Soren Sveistrup, who has earned yours by crafting a series rivalling the very best in its field.
