ONE TO WATCH: DRIVE (DVD)

“One of the most stylish films I’ve seen in a long time, Drive is the story of a Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman until he finds himself a target for some of LA’s most dangerous after a heist gone wrong. Responsible for the death of his neighbour’s husband, he must keep her and her son safe by doing what he does best. And no, I don’t mean looking cool.

Ryan Gosling proves his action mettle in this surprisingly brutal thriller, benefitting from a brilliant support cast – Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston (with added hair) and Sons of Anarchy’s Ron Perlman to name a few – and a cracking score that delivers in spades. Director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising) churns out a number of taut action scenes, creates a believable romance, but it’s the old-school flair of his work that adds such a unique charm.” DW
