"It's a good job Sucker Punch director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen) isn't writing the screenplay for the latest reincarnation of Superman in Man of Steel (2013). If his first solo effort is anything to go by, about a young girl institutionalized by her wicked stepfather who retreats to an alternative reality and envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility, we'll be as disappointed as we were with the lack of action in Superman's last rebirth, Superman Returns (2006).
Action, however, is something Snyder can do. Sucker Punch may hit the wall when it comes to plot and characterization, but the bullet-laden, sword-swinging, punch-packing, dragon-slaying, robot-rocking, Nazi-nailing, samurai-slapping set-pieces bust straight through it, with an over-the-top but gorgeous visual style you've come to expect from Snyder, along with a thumping soundtrack and some wonderfully titillating stereotypes adding to a lengthy list of guilty pleasures.
The good outweighs the bad tenfold (there's little threat to our girls, but will there be any to Superman?), so there's little shame in sitting back and watching a movie move as effortlessly as Sucker Punch does, and if anything, it sure whets the appetite for his collaboration with Man of Steel's writers Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight) and David S. Goyer (Batman Begins). To paraphrase Demi Lovato's tune, when two worlds collide, it'll show what Snyder couldn't find."
