"Jason Statham is Arthur Bishop - a man that likes to fix things - eliminating targets with deadly skill and total emotional detachment. That is until he's paid to do away with his mentor and only friend, Harry (the always reliable Donald Sutherland). It's not a question of getting the job done, Arthur always gets the job done, but how long he will be able to keep it a secret from his new partner, Harry's son Steve (the slick Ben Foster), and above all, when will he use Harry's own legacy to avenge his death...
It's nice to have you back, Simon West. Not since Con Air (1997) have we had so much fun watching one of your movies, remake or not, embracing the magic of an appreciable cast, an attempt at a story and action by the garbage truck-load. Foster almost steals the show from the big man, with both men prepared to do their own stunts, making the action as realistic as our autuer, clearly having fun again, will allow.
There's more than one "Put the bunny back in the box" moment too, including a spectacular chase when Foster commandeers a bus, shortly after some sublime skills with his left hand, and Statham's pièce de résistance with a piece of steak. Add a few welcome twists, a short running time and most refreshing of all, a ferocious fidelity that compliments its thrills, and The Mechanic is one of the most entertaining action-movies this year."
