"Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Olga Kurylenko star in Neil Marshall's (Doomsday, The Descent, Dog Soldiers) reimagining of the Roman army's Ninth Legion, Centurion. During the height of the Roman Empire the Ninth Legion was sent to Scotland to defeat the Picts, but not one returned, not one of three thousand. This is the story of the fearsome battles they may have faced, or what may have enticed them to abandon their Empire.
The trouble with this story is the characters aren't distinct enough, failing to make any sort of impression when the killing isn't happening. Some performances are fine, especially Fassbender's, but in truth it only really gets exciting when we witness extensive abuse, brutality, humliation and plenty of the splatter Marshall is famous for. Sadly, for the most part, the gore is computer generated, which can be unforgiving at the best of times, and although the action is plentiful, it stampedes into territory at the midway point that disappointingly isn't bettered at the last."
